The Unknown, sketch from the artist’s ‘Handbag Book’

In response to Sarah Casey’s sketchbook, at SKETCH, an exhibition of 54 Artists’ Sketchbooks at the Black Swan, January 2014

Open wide, ah, ah, I echo – resonant cavern
tinkling notes hint at mid-winter’s symphonies
dripping stalactites my fangs, a bunch of hibernating
Bats my tonsils… ah, perpetual night, this giant maw

stretching in my mind’s eye – I make you miniature
nib hurtling side to side… the inky graphic seeps

through the other side, but I feather on, the light
a tremulous light – my hand insists on leaving this.
